Article: Process of speaking
There is a proverb — Humans learn to speak around first few years, but to know how to speak, when to speak and where to speak, their entire life.
The first impression is always produced in the manner we speak and it also shows the character of the speaker. Unthoughtful speaking is a big problem and very common in today’s youth. Youth often use profanity a.k.a “dirty language” in their conversation. They use insulting language, swearing words, abusive words and many more. The main reason for this problem is that as a teacher and parents we are unable to provide the value of reading and books to our kids and, as a result, youth are lacking thoughts in their conversation and most of the time conversations are ordinary, meaningless and superficial. We do not know the process of speaking!
When we speak, four body parts function together in harmony. They are lips, tongue, mann (sixth sense) and buddhi(conscious). Whenever “buddhi” and “mann” are ignored then tongue and lips would produce meaningless words and the conversation is not understandable to either side – the speaker and to the listener. This problem is frequent, especially in youth.
If anyone wants to speak meaningful and impressive then ones “mann” and “buddhi” must be aligned with lips and tongue. As a result, the mind is full of thoughts.
First, before speaking one should think over what to speak and “buddhi” should be applied. Think, if speaking necessary? If the answer is affirmative then only speak. Secondly, when buddhi does its work then the function of “mann” begins. The speaker can make the speech meaningful by selecting the proper and meaningful words followed by considering the way of speaking. Thirdly, when“buddhi” and “mann” do their functions properly then tongue will produce a meaningful, thoughtful and clear conversation or speech. And finally, lips will be live and will speak in a powerful way. And, what comes out from lips will be considered by the listener with full attention.
These are the fundamentals of good speech and should be followed by everyone who wants to speak properly. We know that speaking is the natural right and one cannot live without speaking and no one can stop anyone to speak. When it is so, then, why to speak irrelevant and meaningless?
This process of speaking should be taught to the students, right from the beginning of their early school days, possibly from the primary classes. This will certainly help students as good speakers and increase the level of better speech among our youth.
